Aao Ling
Situation: Aao Ling, Monkey Bay, is in Ton Sai bay. It is in fact an open cove, half way between Ton Sai tower and Hin Taak sector, on the western side of the bay.
Access: count fifteen minutes on foot, but only possible at low tide. If not, 5 minutes by boat for a fee of 40 Bahts per person. Oyster Blade Tower, which dominates the cove is easily recognizable, facing Phi-Phi don pier.
Monkey frequent the place: they say that Wolfgang Gullich stuck a banana in the crux of Wiwat (7c), and that a monkey reached it easily, pushing the provocation to the point of eating his prize on the spot, hanging from one arm.
Aspect: facing north-northwest. The tower gets in the shade fairly early.
All rebolted routes have anchors fitted with double stainless steel rings in April 2001.
Always carry extra quickdraws as number of bolts and threads is only approximate and you will need either a daisy chain and a locking biner or extra quickdraws for the anchors.
Bring extra slings for tying off chicken heads on the last pitch.
If you climb the last pitch of the multipitch you will be unable to rappel down from the last anchor. See description of route #1
1. Ligne de Vie 6b, 6b, 6a, 5+ 80m.
Dolby Monet and Wilfried Colonna November 1987
Rebolted March 2001 After 3rd pitch rappeling the route is not recommended. Finish 5+ to hanging belay then traverse left to rap anchor on the back of the tower (15m) and walk down the east gully. Not the easiest walk but if you are careful it will be OK. Used to have fixed ropes...
2. Red Hawk 6b, 5+ 35m
Shamick Byszewski and Cathy Beloeil April 2001
Starts left of the stalagtite and climb right past it and past anchor for route#3.
3. V.D. Resort 6b 18m
Dutch climbing expedition 1988
A good route to get the feel of the place.
The rest of the routes have not been rebolted
